Why zinc?

Zinc is a metal with a number of characteristics that make it an ideal choice for use in busy kitchens and restaurants. Zinc’s natural properties provide years of virtually maintenance-free use. Zinc is nonporous, anti-microbial, and antibacterial. It has a smooth surface that is easy to clean and maintain. In addition, zinc’s blue-gray and brown patinas blend beautifully with most building materials and surroundings.

How do I place an order?

Orders are very easy to place with our online shopping cart. Prices are volume-based, and discounts will automatically be applied. Payments are made online. Once payment is received, you will receive a confirmation email and production begins. Tracking information will be sent to you as soon as your order leaves our warehouse.

What if I don’t see the size I need?

If you don’t see the size you need, we offer fully custom design services through our main website. Our typical custom design process is more in-depth and includes one-on-one consultation with one of our designers. We create drawings for each job to verify specifications and send samples of finishes before a job is put into production, which has an extended lead time compared to our click-to-order line offered through The Cafe Collection website. If this sounds like what you are looking for, you can contact us through our main site at labastille.com.

How many tables do I need?
The size of your space will determine the number of tables, table sizes, and seating. Please refer to the following tear sheet as a reference.
How are the table tops made?

Each table top is hand-crafted in our shop in Savannah, Georgia. Many hours of time and care go into each piece. Every top will have its own unique characteristics and markings. This makes each table one-of-a-kind, rather than an ordinary machined table top.

How much do the tops weigh?

Each table top weighs approximately 6 pounds per square foot. Our tops are not heavy like stone or marble, and a base that will hold a solid wooden top will comfortably hold our table tops.

Payments accepted are Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.

Lead Time

Please allow a four to six week lead time for orders of 20 tables or less. Orders of 20+ tables may take six to eight weeks to complete. Let us know if you have a rush order and we will do everything we can to accommodate your timeline. For large rush orders, there may be an expediting fee.

Shipments are sent via UPS or LTL. We ship to you using the most cost-effective, customer-friendly options available. All shipments are fully-insured for the value of the items purchased. Shipping is standard curbside only! Depending on the size and quantity of your order, you may need assistance getting your items inside your facility or restaurant.

Fastening Our Table Tops to Bases

If you purchase a cast iron base from the Cafe Collection, your top will come with the necessary hardware and instructions to attach the base to your tabletop. If you use an alternative base, we recommend using screws that will go an inch deep into the top from the underside to ensure strong fasten.

How do I clean zinc?

Keep zinc tops clean by using a little mild soap and water. There are no special cleaners needed on a regular basis; simply wiping down the surface daily will suffice. To print out our care sheet click here.

Special precautions:

Do not use bleach, ammonia, or products containing bleach or ammonia on zinc.

Anything acidic like lemon juice or lime juice will lift the patina. The patina will reform over time.

Do not place hot pots on the surface. Zinc is a soft metal and hot pots and pans will leave a mark. Use a trivet if something is coming from the oven or stove.

What is a patina?

A patina is a tarnish produced by chemical processes that forms on the surface of many types of metals. When exposed to the elements, a coating of various chemical compounds, such as oxides or carbonates, form on the surface. A patina showing rich shades of browns and grays can take years to acquire. Our Cafe Collection tables are pre-patinated which creates a weathered appearance that will continue to change over time. These beautiful tones are the hallmark of zinc.

How will it wear?

Zinc is a living alloy. It will respond to its environment. Changes in the hue of the table tops will happen naturally with use. A patina, or darkening, will occur over time. Keep in mind that different foods and beverages may make a mark on the countertop, but because these metals are non-porous, it is virtually stain resistant. Marks that do appear will fade and blend over time.

Is zinc food safe?

Yes, pure zinc is quite safe. Zinc is a chemical element which is readily found in the air, water, and soil. Zinc mineral is necessary for the functioning of more than 300 different enzymes and plays a vital role in a large number of biological processes. The human body requires zinc for proper functioning of the immune and digestive system.

La Bastille uses the highest quality zinc in the industry. Many other companies offering “zinc” actually use a zinc coated galvanized steel which will eventually rust and can contain toxins which have harmful health effects.

Zinc’s Use in Architectural and Design Applications

Zinc has a rich history in design and architectural applications and is known for its long lifespan. In Paris, 85% of roofs are constructed of zinc, and they have a lifespan of 80+ years. Because the material develops a natural, protective patina, it requires virtually no maintenance.

Zinc’s durability makes it a desirable surface material. Zinc is used for countertops, range hoods, roofing, flashing and artistic designs. Zinc’s timeless patina blends beautifully with other materials and makes a stunning material for many design aesthetics, from traditional to contemporary.

Is zinc environmentally friendly?

There are few materials which are as ecologically friendly as Zinc. Zinc is extremely energy efficient in its extraction and processing and is 100% recyclable without the loss of its unique physical and chemical properties. This significantly reduces the need for new raw materials. In fact, over 30% of today’s supply of zinc comes from the recycling process.

Cafe Collection by La Bastille offers a one year limited warranty. We will repair or replace, at our option, any faulty product deemed to be the result of material or manufacturing defects.
